  BIRTH DATE: Calculated based on death register info - i.e. he died 30 Mar 1914 at the age of 86 years, 10 months, 28 days. PARENTS: Father's name is confirmed as George Allen based on Alexander & Anne's Marriage Register (1854). Mother's first name - Mary - as per information on Alexander's brother's 1st marriage info (John)- also confirms father's name as George. On John's info for his 2nd marriage, he provides his mother's whole name - Mary Williams. BIRTH LOCATION: in article written to celebrate a major wedding anniversary, it says Alexander was born in Tubbercurry. His headstone says Co Sligo. 1851 LOCATION & WORK: In 1851, Alexander and his brother George are in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England apprenticing as cordwainers under Joseph Minchin (also from Ireland). 1854 LOCATION & WORK - Alexander is listed in 1854-5 Slater's Directory for Sheffield, Yorkshire, England as a Shoemaker; but by 15 Sep 1854 he is listed in the Valuation Book for Inishcaltra, Mountshannon, Co Clare as being on Lot 35 with a house. MARRIAGE: Alexander & his wife Harriet met in England & were married in Sheffield, England in 1854. Harriet was from Mountshannon, Co Galway (now in Co Clare) and they returned there for a time before immigrating to Canada. Their first child, Mary Ellen, was born in Mountshannon. [1] RELATIONSHIP TO ME: In GL Allen's written memories of his childhood, he describes his father, Alexander Allen, as a "cousin" of my own great grandfather, William Allen (1838-1911 - son of William & Margery). It is unclear if he meant 1st cousin - which would mean the father of John B, Alexander and George of Rothsay and my great grandfather, William would have been brothers - or another 'degree' of cousin. I have assumed a 1st cousin relationship and based the tree accordingly. MEMORIES: Their granddaughter, Meta Cheves Allen,says the family, along with Alexander's brother, *John, first moved to London, England, but "They did not like London very well, so they moved to Canada to take a farm a half a mile from Mount Forest (village), with the exception of my grand uncle *John Allen, who waited in London for a year to see how they would like their life here and then he came to the farm." * I think Meta mixed up her granduncles-it was George that was in England with Alexander - at least in the 1851 Census. According to Alexander's Obituary, John came first to Canada (c1849), then Alex (1856/1857) and then George. MEMORIES of his granddaughter, Meta Cheves Allen - 1964 - "He died at 85 years of age never having been sick for one day. In the latter part of his life he walked a half mile to town and back every evening to help his two sons, George and Thompson Allen, in their shoe store in Mount Forest. He retired at 84. So, his one year of retirement probably was the cause of his death because of monotony."
