Ellen (Morrison) Allen

Notes - Relations: There is strong evidence to support that Ellen was related to her husband, John F. Her uncle, Hugh, was Margery (Morrison) Allen's brother making her father, Richard Morrison, the nephew of Margery.
- Birth Location: Confirmed as Cuiltylough (Cuttylough) in Riverstown, Sligo, in an Oath sworn by her brother, Hugh Morrison (Little Hughie) that was included in the estate papers of Dr Richard Morrison, Victoria, B.C.
- Immigration: Her father came first and sent for the family later. Ellen and her brother Hughie did not immigrate with their mother and other siblings, but stayed in Ireland until after their grandmother died.
- Newspaper Obituary: Mrs Allen, who died at her residence, Farewell, on the 23rd of March, 1905, was a native of County Sligo, Ireland, and was in her 72nd year at the time of her death. She came to Canada in the year 1852 [s/b 1853], and lived in this vicinity until her death. She was married over 50 years ago to her husband who, though a few years older than herself, is quite smart and healthy considering his age. She was of a mild and most kindly disposition, well and widely known, highly esteemed and respected by all who knew her.
Of a family of eight sons, six survive her - viz: - William in Manitoba, Robert, in North Dakota, George, John, Joseph and Alfred at Farewell. She is also survived by one sister and two brothers - Mrs. Joseph Reid, near Mt Forest, Hugh Morrison, Farewell and Dr R. Morrison, M. D., Victoria, B. C. The funeral on Sunday, March 26th was largely attended considering the dreadful condition of the roads and occasional showers during the day. The pall-bearers were here four sons at Farewell, John Morrison her nephew and John Brooks, her near neighbour. Her remains were first taken to St John's Church, Farewell, which is quite close to the residence of the deceased, and the service was conducted by Mr. G. Gwilym, Rector of St John's Church, Farewell and Church of Good Shepherd, Riverstown. After the service, the funeral proceeded to Riverstown Cemetery, Mr. Gwilym also officiating at the grave.
- Excerpt from "FROM THEN TILL NOW-A History of Arthur Township 1850-1985"-Churches: Pgs 158-9 - re the building of St John's Anglican Church which had its' first service Oct 23, 1892 and subsequent improvements. In particular a new church bell in 1905 "... The same year a bell was erected costing $40. ... Mrs John Allen Sr was seriously ill at the time and wished to hear the bell so the door was opened so she could hear it. A few days later it tolled for her funeral."
