Notes - Shelburne Free Press & Economist, Thursday, January 12, 1933 - Page 8 - MRS. THOS. BROUGHTON: Friends here learned with deep regret on Sunday of the sudden passing of Mrs. Thomas Broughton that morning at Port Elgin from heart disease, after an illness of nine days. The deceased, whose maiden name was Margaret Jane Shannon, was 69 years old, was born at Vandeleur, Ont., and came to Melancthon township when the family moved to near Corbetton in 1877. She was married in February, 1899, to Thomas Broughton, who passed away nine years ago. Mrs. Broughton had resided in the district about 45 years and her kindly life and Christian character will be long remembered by her friends and neighbors. She was a member of the United Church at Corbetton. The surviving family are two sons and one daughter, namely: T. R. S. Broughton on the teaching staff of Bryn Mawr College, Philadelphia, Pa.; Arthur, on the homestead, Melancthon township; and Miss Lillian, on the teaching staff of Port Elgin High School. Mrs. Broughton for the past two years has resided at Port Elgin with her daughter.
There are also three brothers: Thos. Shannon, Vandeleur; George, in Markdale, and John, in Vancouver, B.C. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the old home on Highway No. 10 to Dundalk Cemetery. Rev. J. A. H. Hodgson, of Corbetton, was the officiating minister. The pallbearers were: R. Watson, B. Henderson, T. Woods, H. Oldfield, C. Lonsway and J. M. Oldfield. Floral tributes covering the casket were from Port Elgin High School staff; Mrs. R. George and Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Neff, Miss O. Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Shannon, Geo. Shannon. Among the friends present from a distance were: son Robert from Philadelphia and daughter Lillian, from Port Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. George E. Pallister and daughter and Mr. George Broughton, Mono Road; Mr. and Mrs. T. Shannon, Markdale. -Dundalk Herald.
