  Following information contained in a letter written by Ernest Andrew Webster Morrison to Maude in 1964 re family history: John Morrison was a Scotchman. He and others of the Morrison clan were kicked out of Scotland by the McLeod Clan during tho latter part of the 18th Century. They had only one son whose name was Mathias Morrison. The family of three settled in a little town called Killala, situated on Killala Bay in county Mayo, north shore, now in the Irish Free State. They were strong Protestants and Mathias Morrison grew up to be a staunch and steadfast follower of the Wesleys. Mathias served his apprentice as a shoemaker but due to a health problem he had to give up his trade while a young man and seek outside work. He got a job as a gardener with a very wealthy family by the name of Shannon. The Shannon's were Roman Catholic. Mary Shannon, a daughter and very beautiful, met Mathias Morrison and fell in love; they went secretly to a Protestant minister and got married. The Shannon family disowned her. Mathias Morrison went back to his shoemaker's trade. They had a family of of three - Matthew Morrison your grandfather, Maria, my aunt and my Father, Andrew. Matthew was born in 1828, Maria 1830 and Father 1832. Mary Shannon was an only child. As stated previously, the Shannon family was wealthy, owned much land with many buildings and had many servants. Your Uncle Boyd investigated the Shannon estate to some extent and he told me that Jack Morrison, his brother, also tried to fathom the secret of beneficiary, but found out that someone would have to go to Ireland in order to get to the bottom of things. During the spring of 1841, Mathias Morrison and his wife and family found themselves at enmity with the Roman Catholics at Killala. There were five other Protestant families facing a similar crisis. The six families chartered a sailing vessel that year and sailed to the new country - Canada. It required 8 weeks and 3 days for them to cross the Atlantic to Quebec City in a sailing vessel. They settled on-bloc in the Eastern townships of Quebec, but after a few years the Catholics again invaded their vicinity and the six families moved again to Upper Canada. The six families scattered pretty well. Mathias went to Walton [Huron Co] where he went back to his old trade of shoe-making and doing a bit of farming on 50 acres. Matthew and father cleared land and the first winter they had but little to eat excepting potatoes.
