Notes - Known as 'Jack'. He was born in Madoc Twp in 1874, the eldest of William and Fanny McCrea’s five sons, and one year younger than their eldest daughter Lizzie. In 1879 the McCrea family moved north to the Algoma District, arriving at Bruce Mines with Lizzie, Jack and two more daughters, Lottie and Mary. The following year they moved to Thessalon Township, to homestead at Livingstone Creek.
- Jack was interviewed years later about homesteading and he remembered: “we walked from Bruce Mines to Maple Ridge and slept at night in the shelter of a big root. Then we built a shanty. We got a horse and brought it inside at night for shelter. During the night, the horse rolled over and knocked the bunk bed down. Our first cow was sent from Kincardine by a cousin (Fannie’s nephew?). At night, we tethered it out and in the morning it was found dead. Its horn was caught under a root.”
