Notes - From Mary (McLean) Allen - Herb was very young when William & Rebecca moved from Wellington County in southern Ontario to their new log home on Gladstone Township, Algoma District.
When he was 6, he started to school on the first day that school was held in the township. It was held in the first log school house, built on the Allen farm.
Herb farmed in Iron Bridge on the farm now owned (1993) by Tim & Holly Jones and Kent Trivers. In 1909 he married Lottie McCrea. He later sold the farm to his brother Nelson Allen and moved to Livingstone Creek to the farm now owned by his son Dean Allen (1993).
Herb worked as a stone mason. Most of the stone fireplaces that are built around Basswood and Bright Lakes were built by Herb. He also ran a dairy farm at the same time. Herb's wife Lottie died in 1947 and in 1953 Herb married Maud (Tait) Gardiner. Maud died in 1954. Later Herb married Mrs Elsie (Plewis) Thompson and they lived in Thessalon until Herb died in 1963.
From his Obituary:
-He built the Anglican Church of the Redeemer in Thessalon, the O'Connor block, the foundation for the United Church and mixed the cement for the Thessalon Power House built in 1900 while apprenticing for his trade.
-He married Lottie McCrea in 1909 and began farming at Livingstone Creek in 1912. He specialized in dairying and raising Percheron horses.
-He retired to Thessalon in 1946 where he built fireplaces in summer homes, making the brick himself, in his spare time.
