| 4052 | From em from Colleen Goldstein cfgmeeps@gmail.com 10 Jan 2018 - she is a descendant of Agnes - "A story that made me chuckle about Agnes' sister Jane McElroy. I found this is the Dufferin Co Archives. When Jane traveled to Ontario with Hugh & Agnes and their children, she intended to return to Ireland. To that purpose she sewed enough gold coins into her petticoat for the return voyage. I can visualize her sitting sewing the coins into her petticoat. The voyage from Ireland to Ontario was apparently so stormy that Jane was violently ill. She decided she would never travel back to Ireland because she was so seasick on the first voyage. So she stayed and married Robert Armstrong in 1847." | MCELROY, Jane Ann (I7935)

| 4063 | From Find A Grave The following information was taken from birth, marriage, death, and census records. Also information and photos were obtained from Katherine Fox Bass's granddaughter Marjorie Woods of Lombardy, Leeds, Ontario. Researcher Susan Garske Sylvester I was on a mission in Leeds, Ontario to discover my 2G grandmother's name. She was the first wife of Charles Fox and together they had a child Edward J. Fox who was my great-grandfather. I failed at my mission yet was rewarded with stories about his half brothers and sisters and a treasure trove of photos which were provided by Marjorie Woods. This is what I discovered about my 2 G grandfather Charles Fox. Charles fox was born on October 20, 1830 in New York, United States. His father was Michael Fox and I have no name for his mother. I was only able to tie up one other sibling to Charles and her name was Mary Fox. She was also born in New York. I believe they were raised Catholic but Charles will convert to Wesleyan Methodist. What date Charles and Mary immigrated to Ontario is unknown. The first census record Charles Fox was found on was in the 1851 Census of Canada. Charles was living in Crosby Township, Leeds, County. He was 22 years old and born in 1830. His occupation was a laborer. He was working for a Joseph Perkins. Brockville archivists provided this document. I could find no record of Charles Fox's first marriage. He also was not on the census of 1861 of Canada or in the US Census of 1860 in New York. I do know from a diary that his son Edward James Fox was born July 31, 1857 in Forfar, Bastard Township, Leeds, Ontario. Edward's mother died at a very young age and Edward was given to Charles's sister Mary Fox Gutridge to raise. Edward grew up with his cousins in South Burgess, Leeds, Ontario. They lived in an area called the Mill Pond. According to family history Charles was a cooper by trade. He came to Canada and worked at this trade many years while living at Forfar, Ontario. Charles Fox will marry Janette Belonger which was on October 14, 1857. Charles was 32 and Janette was 23 years old. They were married in Smith Falls, Lanark County, Ontario. In the Cranworth Chronicles by Barbara Gibson, she stated that Charles Fox was a mining entrepreneur in the local area. He had a short term lease in 1868 from John Dooher new Bass Lake covering a variety of minerals but soon assigned it to a N.Y. man. She further relates that off of Old Kingston Highway onto the Scotch Point Road at the foot of a hill is a spot referred to locally as the Spring Well Hill, a hill in this area was also called Fox's Hill after the family by the name who resided nearby in the late 1800's." In the 1871 Canadian Census, Charles and Janette were living in the District of Leeds and Grenville North, District #70 in the Sub district of Elmsley b. Charles birth date was 1835 and he was 36 years old. He is married to Janette Fox who was 27 years old and was born in 1844. Charles birth place was listed as Ontario. His religion was Wesleyan Methodist and his origin was Irish. Janette was born in Ontario but lists her origin as French. There were 4 children listed at this time: Mary Fox who was 3 (Mrs. Lewis Kennedy), William John Fox who was 1, and Peter and Mary Ann Fox who were 2 months old. Charles occupation was a farmer. Katie Emma (Agnes) Fox was born after this census in 1874 and she becomes Mrs. Richard W. Bass. A tragedy occurs on March 11, 1877 with the death of Charles second wife Janette Belonger Fox. This leaves 5 children under the age of 9 with no mother to bring them up. Charles will split the children up to live in various homes. I could not find Charles Fox on the 1881 Canadian Census or a US census record of 1880. I did catch up with him in New York. The Fox family history says he stayed in New York (Jender Falls, Lewis County for some years.) From the Cranworth Chronicles by Barbara Gibson she has the date of 1886 as a move of Edward Fox (his son) to this location. I think this is a mix up in names. Edward was already in Langdon, North Dakota so this might be the time Charles moved to New York. The 1890 US census records were destroyed so a New York Census record of 1892 found Charles in the township of Diana in Lewis County, New York. In this census he gave his birth year as 1840 (1830) and stated he was US born. His occupation was farming. Living with him was his son John age 22 years old. He stated he was born in Canada. Diana township was located next to Jerden Falls so I felt comfortable that this was the correct Fox. Canadian Immigrant Record Part One: Recorded a Charles Fox of Lanark County in 1901 stated that he was born outside of Canada. He was 66 years old and date of birth 1834 (1830) 1901 Canada Census Record Charles was living with his daughter Ann Fox Leach and her husband Thomas Leach and their children. They were residing in District 81, Montague Sub district G-3 which was located in Lanark County. Charles states he was 66 years old and born on October 20. 1834. He was born in the United States and was a farmer. 1905 New York Census Record Charles was back on his farm in Diana, Lewis County, New York. He was born in the United States and born in 1836 (1830). He gave his age as 69 years old and was living by himself. His occupation was farming and on the side of the census record was written Jerden Falls Road. 1911 Canadian Census state Charles was born in June 1838 (1830) and was 73 years old. He was born in Ontario. He was head of the household, living alone and a widower. He was living in the County of Leeds in District number 91 Sub-District 1. This was the same description given for the location of his daughter Mary Fox Kennedy and her husband Lewis Kennedy. The Fox family history stated he had lived in a house across the street from his daughter Mary of Portland, Leeds, Ontario until his death in 1918. Living next to Charles was Patrick Kennedy, the father of Lewis Kennedy. Charles J. Fox will die on August 20, 1918. He was buried in Lombardy Union Methodist Cemetery. He shares the headstone with his son Peter Fox who had died in 1908. Charles death Record: It was filled out in South Crosby in Leeds County. It states his name was Charles William Fox (which certainly does not go with the J. on his headstone) Recorded as an American, born in 1830 and death date as August 20, 1919. He was 88 years old when he died. He was residing in the township of South Crosby. His occupation was listed as a discharged US soldier. He was a widower. His cause of death was old age. Finally it says his mother was Janet Bouque (Janette Belonger?) and lists no father's name. I do not believe that was his mother's name. I think it was a poor spelling of his second wife's name. It was probably and error because the line for wife was left blank. I spent weeks researching enlistments into the armed services of the United States. I also checked pensions that were drawn. I was unsuccessful at finding any records that showed Charles Fox was a discharged US soldier. Family links: Spouse: Janette Belonger Fox (1842 - 1877)* Children: Edward J. | 4069 | From Find A Grave - Karen The youngest of seven children, just like her father, Lottie grew up on a farm at the Tone Corners, at the southern end of Bruce Twp., Chippewa Co. The nearest town is actually Pickford, in the next township over. Her father passed when she was seven and so she had no memory of him. She was raised in the house he had built. As a young woman she attended Normal School and began teaching early primary school, for the first nine years in one room schoolhouses. In the mid-1930s her mother sold the farm and the family moved into the Sault. In 1938 she married Orville Christie. By 1942 they had their own home in Donaldson, Bruce Twp., and the couple raised two boys and two girls together. Lottie went back to teaching school in the 1950s, and in 1963 received a B.A.in Teaching from Northern Michigan University. The couple separated in 1963 and she moved back to the Sault. Then she taught early primary on Kinchloe A.F.B. (Chippewa Co.), and from 1966 to her 1976 retirement in the Ann Arbor School System. A couple of years later she spent a year volunteer teaching on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. In the 1970s all of her children lived in Ann Arbor, but in the 1980s three of them moved to Traverse City, and so she joined them in 1991. It is there that she spent her final years. A few months before she died she was told that she was now a great-great-grandmother. When she passed she had eighteen genetic descendants plus two adopted. | LAWLESS, Lottie Elizabeth (I7919)

| 4084 | From Harper Family.ie website - http://harperfamily.ie/about/ Robert and Mary's eldest son Edward (25) eloped and married his sweetheart Margaret Bolton (23), in Tramore, Co. Waterford on 15th September 1862. Edward and Margaret rented Cramer's Grove in Kilkenny leaving brother Robert to inherit the farm in Coon. Edward and Margaret had thirteen children, eleven of which reached adulthood. Cramer's Grove was a dairy farm in 1865 and the "white gold" of then was churned by hand, on the farm into butter, and then sold on the market. To date, the dairy tradition continues with the cream now producing the delicious Cramer's Grove ice-cream by Nigel and Carol, who are the fifth generation of Harpers to farm at Cramer's Grove. The annuities of 19 pounds sterling were paid twice yearly for one hundred years until 1980 when Sam R. Harper (Victors son) made the last payment on Cramer's Grove and became the first freeholder of the title. As in previous generations, three sons of Edward namely Robert, John and William emigrated to Canada, leaving their youngest son Sam to inherit Cramer's Grove. Sam and his wife Mary Jane Leech had a family of ten; nine boys and one girl. Farms were bought for six sons who farmed extensively in close proximity to the city of Kilkenny. They were George and Tilly at Annamult, Bob and Sylvia at Cantwell's Court, Jack and Mabel at Ballyfoyle, Sam and Annie at Sandford's Court, Victor and Alice at New Orchard with Cramer's Grove and Leonard and Bertha at Balleven. Consequently the Harper family were anchored to the land of County Kilkenny. Fourth son Reverent William Harper married Elizabeth and lived in Belfast, and the only daughter Edith married Joe Poole and farmed at Ballybeg, Co. Wexford. | HARPER, Edward (I25299)

| 4090 | From L Hill - Arthur and Marcella met in nursing school. Cleveland philanthropist Samuel Mather knew Arthur from church. He planned to open a series of shelters providing services to the poor, including medical. Mather wanted Arthur to be in charge of the medical care, so he sent Arthur to nursing school so he would be better qualified. Unfortunately, Mather's plan never took off, and Arthur returned to sailing the Great Lakes. | HILL, Arthur Geoffrey (I5587)

| 4092 | From letter from Lois Matthews to Mary & Harvey Allen - 11 Jan 1998 - "Joy says Robert has not done a thing since his mom went into the Nursing Home. He is never on the farm. They don't know where he goes. Hasn't worked since last summer with his brother. I think he is working somewhere. He was sort of tied down looking after his Mom. I have not heard from him this Christmas." | ALLEN, Robert Angus (I3978)

| 4093 | From Lois (Allen) Matthews: "Richard had died in Fork River about the time he was 20. He had painted a hotel inside during the winter that Grandfather had built during the summer. He died of lead poisoning from painting with the doors and windows closed. He was also an artist." | ALLEN, Lodvick Richard (I3124)

| 4094 | From Lois: "Bob and I joined a circus that was owned by a friend of dad's when I was 13, 14 and 15. We travelled by train across Canada into Ontario and back each year. Starting in May and getting back the end of Sept. We earned a lot of money for kids in those days and it was enough to pay for school and extra for Mom. I sold hot dogs and Bob ran one of the rides. We were best friends all our lives. I sure miss him. When we were young we went everywhere together. He stayed home until I was married and Shirley was graduated." | ALLEN, Lois Gwendoline (I3825)

| 4095 | From Lois: "Dad was the baby and inherited Grandmother's long red curls." "Dad was sent to his maternal Grandparents in Mt Forest when he was 15. That would be c1910." | 4096 | From Lois: Based on medical records - at the age of 22, while helping his father put a roof on a hotel in Winnipegosis, he fell, straddled a scaffold and suffered irreparable scrotal injuries. He was engaged to be married at the time. Two years later, after surgery, he grew depressed and he tried to take his own life. Eventually he acquired a university level education. "He had become the engineer in charge of the heating system of the hospital and was free to leave but was too timid to do so. He did leave for awhile when Grandmother was alive, but went back. He lived to be 92. He left all his nieces and nephews the only estate I ever inherited. His problem was depression." | ALLEN, Joseph Alfred (I3134)

| 4097 | From Mary (McLean) Allen - Herb was very young when William & Rebecca moved from Wellington County in southern Ontario to their new log home on Gladstone Township, Algoma District. When he was 6, he started to school on the first day that school was held in the township. It was held in the first log school house, built on the Allen farm. Herb farmed in Iron Bridge on the farm now owned (1993) by Tim & Holly Jones and Kent Trivers. In 1909 he married Lottie McCrea. He later sold the farm to his brother Nelson Allen and moved to Livingstone Creek to the farm now owned by his son Dean Allen (1993). Herb worked as a stone mason. Most of the stone fireplaces that are built around Basswood and Bright Lakes were built by Herb. He also ran a dairy farm at the same time. Herb's wife Lottie died in 1947 and in 1953 Herb married Maud (Tait) Gardiner. Maud died in 1954. Later Herb married Mrs Elsie (Plewis) Thompson and they lived in Thessalon until Herb died in 1963. | 4098 | From mbrandon2175 regarding John & Mary: "They were married the day they left Ireland 24 May 1828 along with Mary's father Thomas and part of his family. I don't have any background for John Peacock (would like to have). His wife, Mary Brandon's parents were Thomas Brandon (1774-1858) and Margaret (Peggy) Jamieson (1780-1859). Thomas' father was Matthew Brandon (born 1748). That's as far back as I can go - hit a brick wall in Ireland. John Peacock and Mary Brandon were my great-great grandparents." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From Myrna Brandon May 10. 1999 http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=5664&sid=07a163b7c98d9a062125747afd094da5 Thomas Brandon came to Canada and settled in Dunkerron, Ont. in 1828,along with his daughter, Mary and her husband (a distant cousin) John Peacock Brandon. Thomas`wife and younger children followed in 1830. I am trying to find Thomas`ancestry. His father Matthew, Vicar in Pettigoe around 1828. I have info on this family from 1828. I have found some reference to Drumkeeran when looking for Brandons, perhaps this is where the Ontario Dunkerron came from. Response from Sean May 10, 1999 Myrna, There are no Brandon's in Drumkeerin today nor in Pettigo which is in Donegal. However, there's one near the latter: Clive and Frances in Manorcunningham, Letterkenny Tel. 353/74-57280 I have a feeling you'll find he's a relative. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | BRANDON, John Peacock (I8688)
